The Crossing - What do you think?

As you know, using two full days to watch a movie is not something that I take lightly. However, given our timing at the end of the nine-weeks and as we move into exams this week, I believe that The Crossing was a perfect fit.

The film provides an interesting portrayal of Washington's crossing of the Delaware River and the Battle of Trenton.

For this blogging session, I would like you to give your reaction to the movie.  Do you think that it was a realistic film?  Did it do an adequate job of teaching history? Or was it mostly just entertainment? Did you enjoy the film? Do you think that films like this are appropriate for an American history class?

I also want to know what you learned about the crossing of the Delaware and the Battle of Trenton. Do you feel like you understand the events better having seen the film? Why was this such an important event? What did the outcome of the battle mean to Washington's beleaguered army?

Please be thoughtful in your response. I really want to know what you think. I encourage you to read the comments of others, then add thoughts and ideas of your own.

This blogging session will remain open throughout this week. After commenting, come back later and see what has been added since you were here.

This movie was realistic, and showed the Battle of Trenton perfectly. It illustrated the setting, people, and place clearly. This movie was great, and it is appropriate for an American History class. The movie helped me picture the Battle of Trenton. It was the first victory that the Continental Army had after a string of crushing defeats. It boosted the soldiers’ morale and inspired many to reenlist in the army for another tour of duty. The Hessians surrendered. The Americans thought now they had a chance to win the war.

The movie in general was pretty good. Though it probably didn't capture the whole thing perfectly, it was a good general overview of the events. The movie also gave you a look of the events that occurred before and after the battle oat Trenton, so all in all, a good film

I agree with Lindsey because it did help me see all that happened and what it looked like. Also It was pretty realistic from what we read in the text book and the two readings. Looking at so many different sources it helped me get the story better. This movie was appropriate for this American history class because it talks perfectly about history in America. The outcome was significant and such a big result of the war. It helped Washington's army get back up on their feet and fight.

I really enjoyed watching this film! I think it did and excellent job pursuing a realistic appearance. From watching the film and reading the passages and the text book, I had a better understanding of the events because they clearly followed the main events leading up to Trenton and the Hessians. If i were any ordanairy person who hadn't learned about the subjected i'm sure i would be dumbfounded and confused by the characters and the events taking place. This was a turning point because it gave Washington and his Army courage to continue fighting the British. After their defeats, Washington was on the brink of giving up but this battle gave his men confidence and a refreshment from the past failures. In Summary, I think the movie did a pretty good job on addressing the events but didn't elaborate on who each character's position and what role they played. Great movie in general!

This was my favorite film we have seen so far in this class because of how well I thought it portrayed the Delaware crossing and the Battle of Trenton. I am still a bit fuzzy on the certain steps of the battle and the events that led up to it that I can only clear up with studying. In my opinion, this film was fit for an American history class because like Rachel E. said the movie didn't straight out tell you who the characters were, you had to have some knowledge on their background. Major events like the American Revolution will be taught in American history classes and this film depicted a major turning point in that revolution that gave American soldiers hope and confidence. They finally had a reason to believe that the odds of winning the war were in their favor.

I really like the movie. I felt like I was actually on the battlefields of Trenton, as well as crossing the Delaware River with Washington's men. Based on my knowledge of this event, I felt like it did an amazing job of portraying the events leading up to the crossing, as well as what happened afterward. Every U.S. History class should watch this.

Since I had a rudimentary knowledge of the crossing, I didn't know that Washington was at the Hessian general's bedside as he was dying. I also didn't know that one of Washington's officers was a physician, and therefore tried to heal the general's wounds.

I enjoyed the movie. It made learning about the crossing of the Delaware much easier. I had no idea just how long it took them to prepare for crossing, I thought they had just left immediately. The movie really showed how much the Colonial Army struggled on their way to victory. I understand the actual battle and its importance much better now. It was definately a turning point because it gave the soldiers somthing to believe in. Even watching the movie, I felt a growing sense of sadness, and when they won the battle without losing a single soldier I was happy. It felt like I was there.

I believe that the film was very good, it was educational but it was also interesting. i was able to learn a lot on the battle at Saratoga and can understand it fully now. This battle helped Washington's army get the food and supplies they needed to keep them healthy, and showed the France and Spain that they had a chance to win the war.

I think the movie portrayed the events well and it definitely made things more understandable and clearer. It was entertaining but realistic at the same time. Winning this battle provided the supplies they needed to keep them going. It also showed how much of a challenge it was for the men to keep going and fighting against the British. I believe the film is appropriate for History classes because it was educational and showed how much this win meant to Washington.

I thought The Crossing was a great film. Not only was it entertaining but it portrayed the Delaware crossing in a great, realistic way. It stuck to the facts and Not only did it show how the Battle at Trenton but it showed the struggle, sickness, and circumstances Washington and his men had to go through. I think every history class should watch this movie because understanding comes better with visuals and this was a great portrayal.

I think the movie was both realistic and entertaining. The way it portrayed the Continental Army and its stuggles made it realistic, but the acting made it entertaining to watch. This makes it appropiate for American history since it was realistic, and gave a new perspective on the events that happened. This movie helped concrete the battle of Trenton and the events leading up to it.

To me the movie was real enough to draw me out of my chair. I never knew that Washington and other Generals were so serious and sometimes mean during the whole movie. I like when a battle is shown in a movie because it gives me a example of how war was done. This gave me a better understanding in the battle of Trenton. Winning this war helped the army to stay alive and have a little more confidence in winning.

I likes the fact that is was realistic and that it was still entertaining. I also liked the actors but the actor of George Washington was my favorite. The movie really helped me understand the Battle of Trenton. The Continental Army was being beaten across the colony of New Jersey and George Washington had to make a hard decision and it paid off for the Americans captured Trenton and captured many Hessians in doing so. This battle was the Continental Army's first win and it really boosted their spirits. It also made many of the Army's men want to come back for they knew that it was a worthy cause. All in all i think it was a great movie.

This movie was very realistic and it really told the story of Washington's crossing of the Delaware River and the Battle of Trenton. It really told the story in a very interesting way and it could keep the attention of a room full of teenagers. Also it was very, very appropriate for an American history class because really taught us about what we were learning about and it was very helpful. Honestly, this movie was a little bit helpful in my understanding of the events. This was an important event because it caught the British off guard and scattered them and it made it easier to fight the British. It also really gave the Americans confidence and courage.
